Our Story …

Hi all, Barney was unfortunately a late withdrawal from the rally, but fortunately an old friend from Cape Otway has come to the rescue and Dimitri Fotinas is now the Co-Driver for the rally. We are packing now in preparation to head to adelaide tomorrow. Rally starts Saturday morning!

We are stoked to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally Autumn 2024! This year, all the teams are driving their shitboxes from Adelaide to Perth, via Uluru. Needless to say it's going to be a pretty spectacular journey!

We participated in the Spring 2022 Shitbox Rally and managed to raise over $10,000 doing it! Our humble Hyundai Excel (OLGA) made the trip with a few repairs along the way and was auctioned off to a new life in Darwin.

So we had to decide - which vehicle would we trust to take us another 3,000+ kilometres across some of the harshest Australian outback? Which vehicle could you rely on to keep going after blowing a hole in the head and overheating it dozens of times? After a short circuit in the electrical system stops it dead in its tracks? After literally drowning it in a river, flooding the entire car? So we chose another Hyundai Excel of course!

One of South Koreas truly iconic automobiles, the little Excels can go anywhere and do anything and we intend to prove it once again by driving another 3,000+ kilometres across outback Australia!

So $600 later and we have our vehicle. A 1998 4 door Hyundai Excel. 3rd gear doesn't work, and it was full of half eaten food and most of the panels are damaged. But it's perfect!

I don't think there is anyone who hasn't been touched by this disease, whether through a friend, family member or work colleague. Let's face it, it's a shit disease that so far we unfortunately don't have the best treatments for. We should do what we can to support better research and hopefully we can finally find a cure. Your donation would be really appreciated, even if it is only small!

We are also looking for sponsors for our team (tax receipt can be provided). We can put business stickers on the car to help promote your business as well. A win for everyone. Please get in touch with one of us if you would like to find out more.

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

Here she is folks, 1998 Hyundai Excel 4 door. She was full of old food when we found her (including half a doughnut). The syncro in 3rd gear is non existent, so its only a 4 speed box manual gearbox. May need to replace one or both CV shafts, but otherwise the car drove perfectly on the 1.5 hour trip home!

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
